Svengali

September 3rd, 2009

You (probably) heard it here first…….. We are duty bound and honoured to bring you the whisper on the breeze, the grape off the vine and the word on the street around all things music and media.

In the 90’s Pablo Eskimo was in two of the hardest working bands in showbiz, namely Five Thirty and Orange Deluxe. Both bands could only be described as voracious tourers, preferring to spend 9 hours a day secreted in the back of dilapidated trannies (the vans, not the sexual preference) trekking around the UK with just a packet of Monster Munch and a bottle of Smirnoff as the in-flight entertainment, all in the name of bringing first class rock n roll to the turned on and tuned in teens of our great land. Peddling their wares, namely stupendous live performances, they undoubtedly met a lot of people and made a lot of friends which leads me to the main sentiment of this message.

Out of the blue Paul was recently emailed by a very nice chap called Jonathon Owen. Back in the ‘90s Jonathan had been in a band called The Pocket Devils and just so happened to have supported Orange Deluxe at the Central Hotel in Cardiff, one of Wales’s premier nighteries.

Jonathon wrote to Paul as he remembered a time when his band had received kind words of support and encouragement from him all those years ago and he ain’t the type of guy to forget in a hurry. Jonathan went on to become an actor and in his own words “did quite well”. So much so that he has been a regular in Shameless and starred in Irvine Welsh’s film, ‘Good Arrows’. I think that’s more than quite well, its ruddy marvellous…good arrows indeed, Jonathan!

Jonathan is now filming and co-producing an internet serial written by Dean Cavanagh called Svengali and it’s a cracker. Very dry, very real and very, very funny it tracks the ups and downs, ins and outs of the soon to be legendary Dixie Dean, a hard- grafting, pavement- pounding compact- cassette wielding (its a retro gimmick to get the demo noticed, good thinking Dixie) band manager doing his uttermost to get his band, The Premature Congratulations demo tape listened to by the esteemed cognoscenti of the holy London music business.

Also starring Alan McGee, you never really know if this is how the music scene works or not but it’s an inspired observation that is totally compelling; keep an open-mind and whatever you do, get on this before everyone starts telling YOU about it.

Jonathan has mentioned that he would love to use some Eskimo material from the new album in the series which is on episode 4 now. You never know, maybe our Paul will get a walk-on part as himself or even as one of the “Premmies”

So! Make sure you check it out and sign-up, it’s got the makings of huge huge hit and we give it our wholehearted support. It feels great to spread the word about something this genius.
